Kook & Lester's Foray 1A

"Great first episode"

date: March 18, 2009

Very stylish, everything was well drawn, the characters were original and the animation was smooth and consistent. The voice work was good and I liked the constant change of pace, there was never the same shot or background for more than a short period of time, which was great.

Only criticisms would be the 'random' character Kook. Characters that are there just to say random words can usually just come off as annoying, not always, and he didn't all through the piece, just some parts. It doesn't work just to have a character say something irrelevant without rhyme or reason.

Other than that nice work, look forward to part DEUX.

Author's Response:

well, in part 1b he doesn't say totally random stuff but instead he says things to make matters worse or just awkward...

Left 4 Speed

"Well, it wasn't Awesome..."

submission: Left 4 Speed
date: February 1, 2009

First let me just say that for the most part it was fairly well animated, consistent and smooth throughout most of the flash, there's not much to quabble about there. The voices too were well done and good quality, for the lines they were given, and were one of the better parts of watching it.

Now, first to address the glaring issue of Egoraptor. Yeah sure it's hard today to make a video game parody and not be accused of copying him. In most cases it's wrong and people are just doing what they have always done on NG, take the piss out of Video Games. However the similarities in this flash are just too blatant that it's clear it's trying to be an 'Awesome' flash. The art style is extremely similiar, as well as the composition and the pacing in general. You made Grand Theft Awesome so I assume you have respect for the man, but it's better to create a tribute rather than pass off a style as your own.

The jokes themselves were lacking. I mean racism? Seriously? None of it had any relevance aside from the fact that Louis is black. At first I thought it might be satire on the fact that Louis is a stereotypical black character, except he isn't apart from the occasional 'DAYUM'. I'm sure drawing any black character with a bucket of KFC will ilicit a few laughs from the knuckle-draggers but it's hardly a worthy trade-off for the integrity of the piece. Aside from that there were a few giggling moments, dick jokes and projectile vomiting, sure. Just seems like there could've been so much more in here since there's so much more to the game. Maybe you didn't want to alienate people who hadn't played the game, but the people watching this will probably have played it anyway and being included in 'oh yeah that bit haha' moments that only people who have played the game will get is what make Video Game parodies good.

The selling of T-shirts and warning not to steal it also comes across a bit arrogant considering you have no idea how popular it'll be yet, though I'm sure it will be. Merchandise should be there to cater to demand, not just slapped on in hopes of making a couple of extra bucks.

It could've been something good, but I just wasn't seeing what would make this stand out from the rest of the crowd. Either that or this is actually a clever satire and I've fallen for it. Either way, you're a great animator and can do better than this.

Author's Response:

read the racism comment. its poking fun at the racists themselves on the internet, not black people.

Awesomeraptor

"Spot on the point"

submission: Awesomeraptor
date: June 6, 2008

I understand how hard it is to criticise egoraptor without seeming like you hate it, I actually enjoy his work but it receives way more credit than it is due. It's not exactly hard to talk fast and swear a lot, but it's funny definitely....the first time or so.

The compilations especially show the repetitive nature of his cartoons, as they all follow so tightly to the basic formula as you've shown. "there's a black guy so let's make him talk gangsta' 'lol this character's gay' 'loldicks' 'lolhot'. It makes you giggle at first but then you just start wondering whether egoraptor is a homophobic, sexist racist, which I'm sure he's not. It's just that you expect to see something new from each piece, rather than the same flash with different characters in it.

This was a great short flash, the animation was smooth, the voicing was great and it made me laugh, so thanks.

Think I'll go watch Metal Gear Awesome again now.

More Brawl Taunts

"Definitely an improvement on the last"

submission: More Brawl Taunts
date: June 6, 2008

Well I judged this too quickly, I'd assumed it'd be just the same as before but I was definitely mistaken. The animation has massively increased in quality from the last one, though I didn't see why the squiggly MSPaint outlines on the characters were necessary, must be a new fad. Good to see an animator improving their work and listening to criticism rather than disregarding it like so many do.

That part at the beginning where you personify yourself and that other person was just awfully cheesy and comes across as self-absorbed, bad start to the flash I'd say. Speaking of bad and cheesy why have you still kept that female voice actor? I cringe every time I hear it. The male voice actor was solid though, a lot more bareable than the last one, not sure if you changed it or just improved. I should've really checked the credits but the window's closed now.

The jokes themselves weren't all that great, I'll admit I laughed at a few of them but then there were just so many that were as bad and predictable as any other flash coming through with dick and fart jokes. I'm sure this caters well for the low teens/preteens age group of ham fisted morons bashing off to their latest anime obsession but I just feel like so much more could be done with this quality of animation.

That's my two cents, now if only Brawl was actually out over here yet.

"Short but sweet"

There was so much style captured in that quick little movie, loved the way that the ogres face lighted up with glee just before pulling out his sword, really expressive. Hope to see more animations from you, hopefully longer.

I don't get why this has such a low score, there was little actual animation, but the same could be said of most sprite movies, and at least the content was solid.
Ah well, keep it up, I love Ackbar.

Dumbledore is Gay

"Not funny, semi-decent animation"

submission: Dumbledore is Gay
date: November 6, 2007

I really didn't get where the joke was, just because he's gay he's also sexist, harassing paeodphile? I know "it's a joke", I just don't see where the humour lies, seems like the entire plot was just to string together some lines of Dumbeldore talking dirty. This could have been done in a funny way, but this is just saying "dumbledore is gay llololol".
Nevertheless, the animation was subpar, just basic tweening of characters with some facial movements, I think if you move away from stuff like this you could make something decent.

November 6, 2007

Author's Response:

This was merely a short that I made. Nothing else I've ever made is like this, though I wouldn't stray from making something like this again. I thought it was a funny idea and the type of animation allowed me to make it somewhat quickly.

Thanks for the review.
