I'm Leaving - Goodnight, Travel Well

Posted by WilliWowza - May 29th, 2009

EDIT: Thank you everyone who has taken the time to read this, I didn't expect to have so many people comment but I assure you I have read what everyone has to say. There's some very interesting replies and it's encouraging to see so many people in agreement which makes me happy that I did write this out. Coffee for everyone.

I'm leaving the BBS.

This isn't something I thought I'd ever do, but it's the way things have gone. Newgrounds is undoubtedly my favourite website in the whole wide world (web) so obviously it'd only make sense that I'd want to be part of the community, the most obvious way being the BBS. Seeing the way it's run and seeing the people with power just use it to inflate their own egos and ruin the experience of anyone trying to enjoy themselves though completely spoils any chance of staying here.

I'll still be on NG. Depositing, watching flash, playing games, going to the matur-LISTENING TO AUDIO. What Tom and the staff has done with this site is absolutely amazing and they are straight up awesome guys. I don't think there's anyone else out there who's more dedicated to their site or their fans as Tom & Crew and that's what makes this site so great. The talent that comes to this site is amazing and it makes me proud to be part of the community when projects like Alien Hominid and Castle Crashers are proudly flying the NG banner.

Unfortunately they don't have reign over the BBS, that's left to other less capable people and as such it's become an experience I no longer wish to be a part of. I won't be posting anymore, save for maybe posting in C&C in clubs I have already joined.

Many of my friends have left already.

Some because of the shambolic and inconsistent way this place is run.

Some have been 'perma-banned', something the mods don't exactly have the power to do, but they'll do it anyway.

And some are just harassed by the people are meant to be setting an example.

AshfordPride
was right, and there's a reason he's not here anymore.

'I'm sick of being banned. I've been here for 2+ years and have 15,000+ posts, I know how things are supposed to go down. Bans should be reserved for idiots who are blatantly breaking the rules on purpose. The folks who post the same shit over and over again or don't listen to other people telling them to stop.

God, whatever happened to locks? Why not just give me a warning? Tell me that you don't like what I'm doing. The mods are so damn subjective, I don't know who's going to ban me for what. Just tell me that this thread wasn't good, or that I shouldn't do something. I'm actually a pretty smart fellow.'

He's right. Yet constantly I see good users being banned and having their threads locked on the whim of a mod, yet any new user is allowed to go around making threads about what they did in school today. Half the time there's no reason given for the lock/ban/delete and since there's no consensus between the mods over what breaks the rules, we never know what's allowed and what isn't.

This isn't a recent problem and certainly isn't something I haven't brought up before. I've spoken with so many other users over this exact issue and they feel the same way, but nothing can be done about it. Any time I or someone else has voiced their concerns it's met with the usual backlash 'quit whining' 'leave if you don't like it' 'this forum would be shit without us'. I love NG and seeing as how it only has one forum I don't really have anywhere to leave to that has the same community, so why can't the moderation system on my favourite website actually work to a point where it's tolerable?

It's obvious how the moderation system works here. It's not about how well you post, or how useful you are (because if you so much as point out the rules then that's 'backseat modding' and you can bet that'll land you a ban). No, it's about the little clique of friends that talk to each other on AIM all the time and then nominate each other to be come mods. It's a circlejerk in all sense of the term and I don't think there's many that would dispute that. It's pretty clear when you consistently see the type of people who are modded and that whenever a mod steps down or gives up their modship, as soon as they make their return 6 months of so later they'll be given it right back again. So many of them are barely even active that it makes you wonder what they're doing there. They're not all bad people, I know that, but some of them are and they're all working in a bad system.

'What else do you expect when you give teenagers and adults with questionable intelligence and social skills some type of power on a place as inconsistent as the internet?' - TacticalShoe

There's no doubt I'm going to miss it. I've met so many great users through this site that it's hard to name them all:

YOUR NAME HERE

Yeah well obviously I can't remember everyone. Even if I attempted to name some of them there'd be hundreds I was leaving off. Even users I've never spoken to but just have always thought were funny or liked the way they posted. Some I couldn't stand, some I even fancied (here's lookin' at you Krum).

So here's to the Camwhore Crew, here's to Join the Party, here's to Cock in the top left corner, here's to animated sigs, here's to cornelius, here's to Regarding, here's to MSPaint battles, here's to forever being level 9, here's to the Chat, here's to Kim Possible hentai, here's to Newgrounds.

If you still enjoy posting here, then that's great, I'm glad you can. If you agree with me, well you know what's the problem is. I'll still be on every day to deposit and watch flash movies, so feel free to drop me a PM if you want to chat.

well zekey beat me to it but congrats on figuring out what the internet is

Im gonna take you out tonight, im gonna make you feel alright

<3

I got a blanket on the backseat on my mind

Plz read this. Im unsure if I have PM'ed you or not but im planing an attack on June 7th where were going to PM all the staff we can into changing the mod system and take down and perma-ban all evil mods. IS ANYONE IN!? IF YOU ARE HELP RECRUIT MORE PLZ!

Come back soon, y'hear?

I always thought the mods were a bunch of n****rs anyway

This story. This story you've put forth upon for the collective to read.
This story here, I've seen too many times from too many whose faces and names I can't seem to forget but have too hard a time of remembering.

I can't keep losing all these pieces of what it was like to have a good time in this particular corner of the net but it seems as soon this Truth, which you have so kindly placed before us in a rather descriptive and compelling manner, is brought to light and left to simmer in your mind as you watch the same shit play itself over and over again, the idea of taking part in the joy that used to fill your time is all but erased and forgotten.

But for a while, you continue, putting up with this charade for the time being. But life continues as well, and suddenly going online to be greeted by the same group of faggots and dipshits, faceless as they may be, suck each other off in an orgy os stupidity, showering every good intentioned user beneath them with their played out antics, doesn't seem so compelling.

Which is why I can't be all too surprised when I see another familiar face check out and hang their face up on the wall.

But I can't help but notice that the faces on my wall are starting to grow.
These sands are far too dry to keep picking up vagabonds to pass the time.
I can't stand to bare the thought of being surrounded by all these faces for much longer.

Oh Minion, you and your pie!

I know how you Ashford Pride and Zen feel.
I don't ever get banned, but then again I don't have nearly as many post as you guys. But still, theres things on the forum that make me wanna just give up on this site all together.
But hey, at least we still have msn, rite?

It's a shame you're leaving, Video Games isn't going to be the same without you :(

I can't speak for the injustice you see in the mod team, I just see it as non-homogeneity between all the different mods. No, we're not perfect, but then I never pretended we were (although I do accept it often seems like we think this).

But anyway :(

See you in the real world

<3

Here's to the good times buddy. <3

Everything in that post made sense. Everything on NG bar the BBS runs smoothly, while the forums have gone to complete and utter shit due to some "mods" abusing control left, right and centre. I understand I may not have helped this issue, hell, I'm not a good poster I'll admit. But still, I see the BBS as a place of fun, not a dictatorship/circlejerk party like it has become.

I shan't be leaving, only to continue the good fight. There will be many more deleted threads, and many more bans coming my way, I can assure you. I'm not liked by the majority of the mod community, and that's fine by me. I have never really broken any of the official "BBS rules", just the new rules that the mods have created. If something has been said that they disagree on or dislike, you can say goodbye to your view and hello to a lengthy ban, contributive topic or not.

So yes, I'll miss you dude. Still chat on MSN and whatnot of course. Maybe we should both buy an account on Something Awful, I hear their forum is pretty standard.

Oh, and guess what? Since you've made this post, my 'perma-ban' has miraculously disappeared. Funny that, isn't it?

Speak soon gay face, much man love.

xxx

That is pretty funny.

See you at Reading.

Dear user, it has been brought to our attention that you may be homogaysexual which might have been caused by too much faggitroll in your system.

Long-term effect of homogaysexuality include:

- Pink clothing
- Small dog ownership
- Elton Johnithis
- Bandanas
- Purchasing more than one hair care product
- Attracting savage anal penetration

i always liked you around the BBS, sad to see you be dissapointed and bummed due to your opinion of the BBS.

i definitley dont agree with you on what you say regarding many things though, first of all you have no idea who becomes mod for what reason, you have no idea who gets banned for what reason - frankly it's very common that users who gets banned exaggerate ALOT, and im not just talking about the one day ban that turned into a "five day ban" in the chatroom, but the fact that pretty much everyone feel that theyve been banned way more times than they actually have. its common that people think that theyve been banned say 25 times, when it's 15 in the reality, and most bans wiht a clear and professional reason given (the other bans for posting in a spamthread, which in itself is a decent reason of course).

the whole feeling of not getting "taken seriously" when complaining about something - so many users start the discussion being abusive assholes, and perhaps it should be routine to just ignore those users - actually thats something id like ot see in the rules, "pm a mod with a valid reason and an explanatory situation" or something similiar. you have no idea how much mods deal with. many times users actually appologice for starting out being assholes, but there are so many who dont. now the circle-jerking - its not strange that people mods know gets modded, i mean, why mod somone completley unknown?

i could go on discussing this with you, but it'll lead nowhere - especially since you've shut yourself from the BBS.

so yeah, good luck and all that, i hope you pop by the BBS now and then anyways.

Maybe we should stop paying the mods. Oh wait.

Everyone needs to keep in mind Newgrounds.com is #1 a Flash website. Then there's the audio portal, the up coming art portal, etc. We run the site with a skeleton crew of paid staff who work on maintaining the site and building new features. Should they all stop and focus all their energy on the forums that hardly any of our visitors use? Sadly we can't afford to do that.

So we give the forums as much attention as we can manage and rely on our team of VOLUNTEER moderators to keep an eye on things. Overall they do a pretty good job, but they aren't perfect and sometimes we may have mods that are less perfect than others.

I may try to look into your concerns and see if any adjustments are needed in the way the mods are modding the forums. It has been awhile since we made any new forum mods and many of the current mods maybe inactive. From time to time we have to clean our those who aren't active anymore and look for replacements.

I'll share some facts with you that may help you understand what we and the mods are up against. I'm not sure how many of our mods are active and how much time each of them can spend watching the forums, but you all probably have a rough idea.

From this past Monday: 3,080 BBS visitors today (posting 6,421 posts).

Let's say we had FIFTY active mods that day, which isn't the case. They would have to each view 128 individual posts to see everything that was posted. In reality we probably had 10-20 mods that were active that day. With 20 mods (and I think it's safe to say we don't have 20 active mods that are putting in a lot of time on the forums in a single day) they would have to review 321 posts each.

There is no way the mods can catch and deal with everything. To try and maintain some kind of order they have to be pretty harsh and try to set examples for the mass of forum users to follow. There is so much to deal with they can't always get it right.

What we really need is a way for users to flag problem posts, topics, etc, and then the mods can focus on a list of flagged content and determine what to do. However our staff doesn't have the time right now to take on programming a system like that, as far as I know.

I will take your concerns into consideration and talk to the mods about it. I'm sure some would agree with you, while others would disagree. Our mod team is more diverse than you may think.

I'll miss you.

Much man-love.

~Malachi

I agree with a lot of the sentiments here and I will miss seeing your posts. <3

Don't go!

I don't want to have to miss you :(

Haha, another user who think he knows how the moderation team operates. Fact of the matter is that, unless you are a moderator YOU DON'T KNOW HOW IT WORKS. You just have a cry when you get banned and think life is full of injustices. I guarantee you, if I was to go look at the ban list right now, the amount of regular users on there would be a HUGE MINORITY. Logic dictates that when an unknown spammer is banned, nobody notices, but when a reg is put in the corner, everyone does.

In any case, it doesn't really matter. I do agree with a couple of the points you mentioned about issues with the moderation team, but unfortunately thats what happens when a site grows. We can't always be perfect, and as the workload increases, mistakes are sometimes made.

So good luck with everything, and I'm sure you will be back. It's a shame that you are leaving though, because I think as a user you have improved dramatically over the past year or so. Unfortunately, after reading your news post, I can see that you haven't lost the "high and mighty" though.

Jaded regs leaving are a dime a dozen. It is the natural order of things. I don't find it at all surprising that people outgrow the BBS. I just wish that would admit that as the reason for leaving instead of having a go at the moderators who put out large swathes of time to try and make the BBS a better place.

Heres to the fun days from years 2005-2009. RIP BBS REGS!

In about a year or a few months I'd c&p this for my goodbye post

Good luck, brah. There were fun times now and then on XBL/paltalk/stickam. I'll drop you a PM some time or other.

"So here's to the Camwhore Crew, here's to Join the Party, here's to Cock in the top left corner, here's to animated sigs, here's to cornelius, here's to Regarding, here's to MSPaint battles, here's to forever being level 9, here's to the Chat, here's to Kim Possible hentai, here's to Newgrounds."

Sad to see you go Willi. Thanks for all the laughs over the years.
